I was 9 or 10 when I was introduced to Madonna via a new friend and the Like a Prayer album.
For much of my young life Madonna was a goddess, definitely a superior being, until I watched #inbedwithmadonna which confused the hell out of me. Wait what, she’s a real person?!
These days Madonna is 100% accessible, on instagram and all over. It wasn’t always like this. I used to buy German pop magazines just so I could cut out the pictures of her to keep in a special box and I’d listen to the radio with my mixed tape ready to hit record, in case a Madonna song came on.
As I got older, I wanted to time-travel back to 1983 New York City and hang with Basquiat and Madonna and Bowie and Dylan at the Factory. I still do.
I’d find it hard to pick a favourite Madonna song... anything between 1983 and Ray of Light. I still know the lyrics to pretty much all the songs from all those albums (though some of them are still not quite right because I learned them before my English was fluent enough to know what I was singing). Madonna is my hero. She’s never cared what people thought of her. She just wanted to dance and sing and take over the world and so she did. Pretty badass 😎
